Key Largo Fishing Report: October 2026 Brings Strong Bites Inshore and Offshore
Cooler mornings and shifting winds are reshaping the bite around Key Largo this October, and local captains say the transition from summer to fall patterns is already paying off for anglers willing to adapt.
Inshore Conditions

On the flats and in the backcountry, falling water temperatures are pushing bait schools into the channels and along grass flats, drawing in reliable action. Mangrove snapper and mutton snapper are feeding aggressively on the patch reefs, while redfish and snook are showing up in good numbers around the mangrove edges as bait pushes out of the backcountry with the season's changing tides.
Tarpon are still around for anglers who want a late-season shot at the silver king, particularly in the early morning hours before boat traffic picks up. Permit are also cooperating on the flats, especially around crab-heavy structure.
Offshore and Reef Action
Offshore, October is prime time for blackfin tuna, with scattered weed lines and current edges holding bait and drawing in schools a few miles off the reef. Sailfish are beginning to show as the first fall cold fronts push through, and captains expect the bite to build through the month as more fronts arrive.
On the reef itself, yellowtail snapper remain a dependable target, especially with a chum block working in moderate current. Mutton snapper and mangrove snapper continue to round out reef catches, and the occasional cobia is turning up around markers and wrecks.
What's in Season
- Mangrove and mutton snapper (patch reefs and deeper reef structure)
- Yellowtail snapper (reef fishing with chum)
- Redfish and snook (backcountry and mangrove shorelines)
- Tarpon and permit (flats, early morning)
- Blackfin tuna (offshore weed lines and current edges)
- Sailfish (building through the month with early cold fronts)
Local captains recommend checking wind forecasts closely this time of year, as early fall cold fronts can make for a bumpy ride offshore but often trigger some of the best bites of the month right before and after they pass through. Anglers planning a trip to Key Largo this October should find plenty of options whether they're chasing dinner on the reef or a trophy on the flats.
